My Journey with Cold Water Therapy

If you’re curious about whether to take the plunge into cold water, you’re not alone. Embracing this practice was a journey for me that required mental preparation and a deep understanding of my body. I began with breathwork to help regulate the overwhelm I frequently experienced, and I had a strong inner knowing that I needed to face the cold to reset and kickstart something deeper within me.

Starting with cold showers for a month allowed me to acclimate to the chill. I knew my body was sensitive to cold, and I suspected my baseline level of adrenaline was higher than normal, often due to being stuck in a dysregulated state that contributed to my burnout. Not everyone approaches this the same way—my friend dove right in without hesitation! But it's essential to adapt practices to what our own bodies need. Let’s explore how cold water therapy can serve as a powerful tool for reducing overwhelm and enhancing your well-being.

In this post, I'll share my personal journey with cold water therapy, its benefits, and tips for getting started.


What is Cold Water Therapy?

Cold water therapy encompasses various practices, including cold showers, ice baths, and immersions in natural bodies of water. It’s not just about the physical challenge; it’s an opportunity to connect with yourself, cultivate mental resilience, and enhance overall wellness.


Mindfulness Connection

When you immerse yourself in cold water, you engage in a mindfulness practice that encourages present-moment awareness. The shock of the cold temperature can help your body recognise that it can slow down and find safety. This newfound peace can spark curiosity and deeper healing, giving you an opportunity to explore the underlying root causes of any discomfort you may be experiencing. While cold water therapy can aid in creating this connection, it is important to acknowledge that it is not a cure for physical or mental health issues; but it can certainly contribute to bring awareness to support what you truly need.


What to Expect

Here are some sensations you might experience during cold water immersion:

  • Initial Shock: Expect a gasp reflex or breathlessness lasting up to 90 seconds. This is your body adjusting; focus on deep, calming breaths.

  • Cold Sensation: You may feel intense cold, especially in your extremities. This sensation will soften as your body adapts.

  • Emotional Responses: You might feel fear, excitement, or even tears—this is completely normal! For someone like me, who held feelings in for a long time, this practice brought an important awareness: my body loved a good cry. I immediately felt lighter. The connection with others in these moments is beautiful, too.


Cold Water Benefits

Cold water therapy offers numerous benefits, supported by research:

  • Increased Endorphins: The chill can signal your brain to release endorphins, contributing to feelings of euphoria and helping to reduce anxiety and improve stress levels.

  • Vagus Nerve Stimulation: Cold exposure may stimulate the vagus nerve, promoting a healing state known as “rest and digest.”

  • Euphoria and Mental Clarity: Many report experiencing a “cold water high” after immersion, which can enhance alertness and focus.


These benefits can contribute to overall well-being and mental clarity. It is essential to recognise that individual experiences may vary, and cold water therapy should complement, not replace, professional treatment for any health concerns.

To ensure a safe and effective experience, follow these best practices:

  • Prepare Gradually: If it feels right for you, start with cold showers to acclimate your body.

  • Safety First: Always listen to your body, stay within your depth, and wear appropriate gear like water shoes.
